Sample - The answer to crime is harsh laws

Here's another sample essay. When discussing other means of punishment, the writer makes it a point to compare them with harsh laws to justify that one is more effective than the other... something that you might wish to learn

Sample war essay + paragraph structure

Here's a sample war essay. It's a different question from the one that I gave in the test but most of the points can be used.

This essay has very clear paragraphs, something that all of you need to keep in mind:
- Topic sentence (make sure this answers the question directly)
- Elaboration/Evaluation (how & why/reasons)
- Examples
- Concluding statement (many of you have forgotten this but this is impt in reinforcing your idea. This statement should reiterate the main point of the paragraph)

Pls also remember that your introduction MUST include your stand/thesis statement.

A word of encouragement...

I've heard that some people have been feeling discouraged because of block test results and all and realised that I've probably not been very encouraging to all of you either. If I've discouraged anyone in any way, pls don't take it to heart...I have a tendency to use 'reverse psychology' and sometimes I may sound too sarcastic and not exactly very motivating. Pls know that I'm rooting for all of you to do well in the A-levels even when I don't say it! Drop a hint or two when you want me to be more encouraging and I'll do so :)
It's been a tiring term for most of you, what with SYF, competitions, 30th Anniversary and all... do take care of yourselves and have sufficient rest. It's going to be over soon :)
Do let me know if you have problems coping with the homework and I'll see what I can do. I know I'm also pushing you all a lot more this term so do yell if you feel overwhelmed ok.

Hang in there and 'jia you'!
Here are some random 'cute' pics to brighten your day...

Media Readings

Here are some readings that will hopefully help those who are writing the remedial essay on press freedom. Even if you don't see me for remedials, do read through these readings for extra info.
This set of readings is mainly on press freedom and censorship. I'm collating another set on citizen journalism. If you've been following the news, you'd have realised that this has been the hot topic recently. Hopefully I can get the readings up soon.
You should have realised by now that my favourite resources are the Straits Times, Economist, Guardian, New York Times and BBC. These have proven to be rather reliable sources with a large range of resources that you can access as well. Of course, you can always read up articles from other sources...just be careful and make sure these sources are reliable.

'We are constantly wired' - essay outline & sample

Here is the outline for the block test question on being constantly wired. Quite a number of you wrote this essay, I'll try to go through this in class if I have the time. The main problem many of you had was with the definition of 'wired' so please note the definition given in the outline.
The sample essay was written by a student from another class, it's pretty good.
