AQ 101

Glad to see know that some of you are already trying out the AQ. It's actually not as difficult as it seems because all of you have been practising similar questions throughout the year during the reading periods.
Here's a step-by-step guide that will hopefully help to clarify some doubts and get you started

How long has it been since you read a book that isn't a textbook?? (Harry Potter not counted!)

In case you are bored over the holidays and want some suggestions for 'light' reading, here are some of my personal favourites...

1) Chronicles of Narnia: most of you should have watched the movie by now. But I think the book is better
2) Uncle Tom's Cabin: a classic about discrimination against Blacks in America. We'll be discussing discrimination in J2 so will be good prep for the topic
3) To Kill A Mockingbird: ditto Uncle Tom's cabin
4) Sophie's World: Philosophy 101 written in story form
5) A Child Called It: true story of an abused boy
6) Fast Food Nation: the predecessor of Super Size Me. Some pp didn't dare to eat fast food after reading it so brace yourself....
7) Tuesdays with Morrie: was pretty touched by this book when I read it
8) Animal Farm / 1984: 'Big Brother's watching!' Find out what we mean when we talk about an 'Orwellian world'

Holiday Homework...Yayy...

I'm sure this is what you've all been waiting for :) Ok, shall not be sarcastic...but just a gentle reminder that you need to continue practising GP during the hols.

There are 2 sets of homework. The first is the one that you see on Litespeed - compre papers which are given to all GP students. I'm putting them up here again in case you can't access Litespeed. The 2nd is a special something from me to you :)....It's to ensure that you keep reading over the hols

1. Comprehension Papers (Litespeed)
Deadline for submission: 3 January 2007, 2 pm (must do all 4)

Suggested Schedule for Holiday Homework (please click on the links to print out):

Week beginning 13 Nov - AQ(teenagers) Insert AQ(teenagers)

Week beginning 20 Nov - TJ Insert TJ Answer Booklet

Week beginning 4 Dec - MI Insert MI Answer Booklet

Week beginning 11 Dec - RJ Insert RJ Answer Booklet

2. Newspaper Reading (choose A or B or a mixture of both)
Deadline for submission: First tutorial period in 2007

Option A
Instructions:
1) Read the Review and/or Insight sections of the Straits Times (after the World section). (Note: 'Review' can be found in the newspapers every day while 'Insight' is only found in Friday's papers)
2) Choose 1 article and write a summary of what you have read (in point form)
3) Write a short paragraph stating the reasons why you agree/disagree with the writer
4) Write down the meanings of 5 new words in the article

Option B (this is for those who like to read about issues from a perspective other than the Straits Times')
Instructions:
1) Read the 'Opinion' (http://www.nytimes.com/pages/opinion/index.html) section of The New York Times or the 'Special Reports' (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/default.stm) or 'Analysis' section of BBC news website (http://news.bbc.co.uk/)
2) Choose 1 article and write a summary of what you have read (in point form)
3) Write a short paragraph stating the reasons why you agree/disagree with the writer
4) Write down the meanings of 5 new words in the article

For both options, you should attach the article to your answers. You should hand in at least 4 articles (i.e. 1 per week) when school reopens. You can choose to read a few articles from The Straits Times and other articles from the foreign papers.

Enjoy!
